Ramsey County Undersheriff David Metusalem to replace Dennis Flaherty




Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) President Jeff Stilwell on behalf of his Board of Directors today named Dave Metusalem as the association's new Executive Director, replacing long-time Executive Director Dennis J. Flaherty who is retiring effective June 1.  Metusalem takes the helm of the MPPOA having capably served as Chief Deputy to Sheriff Bob Fletcher and Undersheriff to Matt Bostrom in the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.


"Dave brings years of top managerial experience in law enforcement and is widely viewed as a progressive and highly respected manager of police public affairs and public safety issues," said Rochester Police Lieutenant and MPPOA President Jeff Stilwell.  "Over his thirty-year career, Dave has developed a sterling reputation as a strategic thinker within police circles eager to delve into complicated public safety issues and projects in Ramsey County.  Our association of police and peace officers will be well-served by Dave's experience and temperament."


Since 1988, when Metusalem joined the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, he quickly rose through the ranks to his current position of leadership and oversight of the 400-member agency and $50 million annual budget, managing day-to-day activities in Divisions of Administration, Courts, Jail, Patrol and Investigations.


 Metusalem was elected to and served for two years on the Board of Directors of the Public Employees Retirement Association of Minnesota representing over 250,000 active and retired public employees throughout the state gaining keen insights into issues of great importance to the MPPOA. He was the police and fire representative on the Board.


"Dave's background and experience make him the perfect fit for the job," said Dennis Flaherty, who for 25 years held the position of Executive Director and is the voice at the state Capitol of over 8,500 rank and file police officers from across the State of Minnesota.  "As I transition to a new phase of my life and career, I am confident that the rank and file officers across our state will see in Dave a forceful advocate who will skillfully navigate the many issues facing our association on a daily basis."


Metusalem holds a Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration from Hamline University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Metropolitan State University.
